Balthazar, the african magi king

Discover the fascinating story of Balthazar, the African Magi King, and his role in the Christian tradition. From Bethlehem to the great works of art, explore his symbolic and historical legacy.

It all begins over two thousand years ago…

In a world where destinies were written by the light of stars, three visitors from the East embarked on a journey that would mark history. Their destination: Bethlehem, guided by a celestial light, to pay homage to a newborn child—no ordinary child, but a king… Jesus of Nazareth.

The Gospel of Matthew recounts this legendary scene: Magi—astronomers or perhaps sages—arrive before the child and present him with three gifts of profound meaning:

  • Gold, symbolizing royalty.
  • Frankincense, evoking divinity.
  • Myrrh, used as a balm and foreshadowing Jesus’s humanity, offered by Balthazar.

But who were these men really?

Ancient texts neither name them nor specify how many there were. Yet over time, tradition took root: three kings united in this mystical quest. Tertullian, in the 2nd century, spoke of their royal status, and Origen, a century later, established their number as three.

It was a 5th-century manuscript, the Excerpta Latina Barbari, that finally gave a face and identity to these mythical figures:

  • Melchior, the eldest, bearer of gold.
  • Caspar, the Asian, who brought frankincense.
  • Balthazar, the African, the most enigmatic of the three, who offered myrrh.

Up until the Middle Ages, depictions of this scene did not distinguish the Magi by origin. But beginning in the 15th century, Christian iconography took a pivotal turn. Balthazar began to be portrayed as Black—majestic, richly adorned. He is no slave, no servant: he is a king.

This was a powerful and rare image in Western art: an African shown in all his nobility. The Adoration of the Magi became a pretext for artists to represent the diversity of the world—and perhaps an unconscious homage to the grandeur of African civilizations.

An interesting anecdote: one of the most famous paintings featuring Balthazar is The Adoration of the Magi by Jan Mabuse, where a Black king is shown in full splendor, adorned with gold and luxurious fabrics—evidence of Europe’s fascination with the exotic and the might of African kingdoms.

A myth, a legacy, a historical representation

The story of Balthazar goes beyond religion. It raises questions about the place of Africans in Christian narratives and in the European collective imagination. Why an African Magi?

Some see it as a simple allegory of the three known continents at the time—Europe, Asia, and Africa. Others view it as an implicit acknowledgment of Africa’s role in the history of civilizations.

But beyond interpretations, one thing is certain: in a world where the image of Black people has often been distorted by colonial history, seeing an African king among the great rulers of the Bible remains a powerful symbol.

A story still alive today

Even today, Balthazar continues to intrigue and inspire. He is an artistic legacy, a cultural symbol, and a fascinating figure whose story still resonates.

And you? Had you ever noticed the presence of this Black king in nativity scenes and paintings?
