On Tuesday, February 21, 2017, former American basketball star Magic Johnson was appointed President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. His arrival coincides with that of Rob Pelinka, who was named general manager and Johnson’s right-hand man, replacing Mitch Kupchak. Johnson stated that he wanted to “work tirelessly to bring the Lakers back to NBA championship glory.” Shortly after officially taking office, Johnson acquired Corey Brewer from the Houston Rockets in exchange for former Lakers player Lou Williams. Johnson had also claimed that he intended to reserve a position for Kobe Bryant if he were appointed.
